Shoulder Troubles After Breast Cancer

Having shoulder troubles after going through treatment and surgery for Breast Cancer is VERY common unfortunately. The good news is there are a lot of things that can help bring back range of motion, strength, and decrease pain!

To try to limit the troubles, it is important to not overdo it with the arm(s) that had surgery. For my patients I recommend not to raise the arm(s) past shoulder level for at least 2 weeks. This allows the arm to heal including the lymphatic system. This can help avoid developing cording, swelling, and pain in the arm.

During the 2 weeks it is okay to move your wrist and elbow as well as shoulder, but stop at the shoulder level. After 2 weeks from surgery, you can gently start stretching the shoulder. It is important not to go past 1/10 pain. Gentle is the key word!

If your shoulder motion does not return to what it was before surgery or you are still having pain, it is imperative you speak to your medical team for a referral to therapy. The sooner you see a therapist, the easier your recovery will be for you..and your therapist!
