Red Light & Lipedema
Red light is becoming more popular in the wellness world. With most wellness tools AND Lipedema, there needs to be more research. However, people using red light who have Lipedema are feeling better! So we need to take this into consideration until research is published.
Let’s take a look at what we do know about red light…
The term “red light” can be referring to a combination of 2 different red lights, red light and near infrared (NIR) light, or individually..
Red light penetrates 2-5 millimeters which is not very deep. Due to it being superficial, it can help skin appearance due to helping collagen regrowth, wound healing, increase blood flow, and decrease inflammation and pain.
Near infrared light goes a little deeper ranging from 50mm - 2 inches. This allows the light to reach deeper tissue. This can help muscle recovery, joint health, support the nervous system, increase circulation and decrease inflammation.
If you are familiar with Lipedema and its symptoms, red light benefits sound like the perfect tool!
Red light is becoming more affordable for people to have in their homes. As with any new tool someone uses, I recommend starting off slow and increasing time slowly based on your symptoms. I started using my red light panel for 5 min and now do 20 min sessions.
There are also many businesses who have red light therapy that you purchase packages if you want to try it before you purchase.
Red light can also help with recovery after Lipedema Reduction Surgery and other surgeries, but get clearance from your surgeon prior to starting!
Want to learn how to manage Lipedema including at home? I have created a digital course that includes EVERYTHING I teach my patients in the clinic including how to do MLD, how to soften tissue, compression garment options and how to measure yourself, exercises, and more! I also created a mini-course on how to do cupping at home to help Lipedema.
